Welcome to the second issue of IT Sanctuary, the magazine for Logicalis' customers.
In recent months, newspaper headlines have made for pretty unappetising reading: job losses and failing businesses make us all nervous, whether or not we're directly affected.
But it seems to me that, while it's not the first time IT departments have had to wrestle painfully with recessionary pressures, the issues surrounding IT investment are more complicated than in any previous time.
For some organisations, the natural reaction is to do whatever it takes to reduce expenses - and historically, one of the easiest places to attack the bottom line has been IT. But those tempted to go down this route this time may have seriously underestimated the role that IT plays today.
In short, IT has become an engine of productivity, of streamlined processes and of growth in terms of new service and product innovation. That means that organisations need to take a long, hard think before they cut IT investment and understand how any reduction might hamper its critical contribution.
“IT leaders must have the courage to make long-term decisions during the economic crisis and look beyond the immediate threat towards the future,” say analysts from IT market research company Gartner. “The world has changed, and your role as an IT leader must change as well.”
